ORIGINAL VRED SIGNS FIRST PRO CONTRACT

Jake Allen, an original V-Red Prospect as part of the 1990 team, reaches a major milestone in that he was drafted recently to the St Louis Blues, fresh off winning the Gold Medal in Russia for his Under 18 team coached by Pat Quinn back in April. Jake was selected 34th overall by the Blues, 4th in the second round, and had stellar performances at both the Rookie Camp and the Main Camp. In October, the dream became a reality as Jake signed his first NHL Contract with the Blues, a 3 year, 3 million dollar contract, congrats Jake, a long way from the Sunday mornings of Sports Excellence! Well done!!

UNB PROSPECTS PROGRAM HAS DOMINATING QMJHL DRAFT

The UNB Prospects Program had a dominant day at the 2008 QMJHL draft held in Sydney, Cape Breton June 7th, with an amazing eight 1st round draft selections and an overall total of 48 players drafted who were either members of the Prospects or whom have attended the UNB Advanced camp program. In fact, in the past three years, an amazing 89 players have been drafted to the QMJHL from the UNB development program. The 1992 V-Reds Prospects team has been a dominant force in North America for the past five seasons and even showcased themselves globally last year in winning an International tournament in Sweden. Former Prospects made up the top three picks of the 2008 draft and five of the first six picks were all regular members of the 92 squad.

First round opening pick was Brandon Gormerly of PEI selected by the Moncton Wildcats and a long time 92 V-Red Prospect.

The 2nd overall pick was a former V-Red Prospect teammate Sean Couturier from Bathurst who was selected by Drummondville. Both were teammates this past year for the Notre Dame Hounds.

The 3rd overall pick was Brandon Hynes from Norris Point, Newfoundland – another 92 Prospect who also attended both the UNB Senior Advanced and Crimson Prep camp in 2007.

The record setting selection process continued when PEI Rocket selected Dartmouth, NS native Ben Duffy at # 5 overall while Lewiston Maineiacs selected Garrett Clarke with their first pick and 6th overall in the draft. Both Duffy & Clarke also were longtime 92 Prospect players and also attended last year’s UNB elite camps. The Maineiacs then stepped up and picked another Prospect in Michael Chaput with pick # 9 in Round 1. Maineiacs Head scout Roger Shannon was the architect of the 92 Prospect program and deserved immense credit in making such a significant difference in the development process of many of these players. Other Prospect first round picks included Glace Bay, NS native Logan Shaw at # 12 to Cape Breton and Dieppe native Alex Noel to Val D’or at the # 15 selection.

In the second round, the Prospects trend continued with four selections including local Fredericton product Zack Philips being selected by Lewiston with the 34th selection of the draft followed up by long time team-mate Zack Shannon being picked # 46 also by the Maineiacs. Both Philips and Shannon will continue their development next season at Lawrence Academy Prep School in Groton Mass. Eight other members of the Fredericton Canadians AAA program were drafted after Shannon’s selection and all were former participants in the V reds program. The following is the complete list of 2008 QMJHL selections:

Very Special Weekend for the UNB V-Red Prospects

This past weekend marked a very special place in the development of the UNB V-Red Prospect Hockey Development Program. The UNB program won both the Midget 92/91 and the Bantam 93 Division at the Warrior Meltdown in Montreal. The tournament featured teams from all over the world, including the US and Canada along with Sweden. The 32 team event has become known over the past 15 years as the top spring/summer event, where all the best players are showcased.

This year, the Prospects did the best you can do, win everything. The all 93 team won the Bantam, and the all 92 won the older division. The highlight of the weekend for the 92 team had to be the return of former goalie Tyler Piercy from Fredericton who has been away at Prep School in the USA. Tyler posted a measly 1.0 goals against average on the weekend, giving up 7 goals in 7 games and posting 2 shutouts. For the 92 born boys, who all available in the upcoming draft with the exception of Piercy who has been away for two years, it virtually showcased them to all teams. The V-Reds had 6 teams in total, with 5 of the 6 making the crossovers. The V-Reds defeated the East Coast Selects in the semi-final for the 93 division and defeated Brandiwine in the older division. This marks a first for the event where not only were the 6 full teams from one program, the program won both divisions. The prospects took 78 players to Montreal in total, and of the 78, 75 are planning to be back in July in Fredericton to attend the UNB V-Red Senior Advanced Camp. This is exciting for UNB. It is expected that of the 78 who attended, with 55 eligible for the upcoming QMJHL Draft, the program is hoping for a 50% draft rate. The 92 V-Red Prospect Program, operating since 2000, marked a very successful completion to their program, making this their 43rd event over the years, winning back to back Montreal Championships in both 07 and 08 as well as going 14 and 0 during that time. For most of the 92 boys it marks the last time many will play together, as the boys move on into their draft year. It also marks their final weekend in Gold for the 15th time.

In the final, the 92's defeated NIKE BAUER SELECTS from the Mid-West coached by Gino Cavallini 4-2 and the 93s defeated the Mississauga Ice Dogs 4-3.

Back on Sept 8 a number of the ’98 VReds got together here in Saint John to take part in a Ball Hockey jamboree in support of the local Junior Achievement organization.

A couple of the Sea Dogs players, including former VReds Prospect Mike Thomas of Fredericton (red hoodie), came out after their practice so we snagged a picture. The Sea Dogs players then took part in a friendly game of ball hockey with the players.

The guys had a great time.

No less than 26 former participants of the UNB program were selected in the annual affair surpassing the 15 players who were chosen last year in Charlottetown, PEI . The V Reds program was established in 2002-03 and in just five short years has established itself as the top development program in Atlantic Canada for elite level hockey players.

This spring, ten AAA elite teams (1990-1999) are currently in operation, participating in various top level tournaments throughout Eastern Canada and the USA. This includes two 1990-91 squads who competed at the recent Warrior Meltdown (Mission Cup) in Montreal . This was a team for the ages, and expect them to be the hunted now wherever they go!! One parent from an opposing team made the call right after the game, and all he could say is no congrats, just, we will beat you in NAPS and take back the title.
The Cup has been a long time coming for many of these boys, the Montreal event is clearly one of the most sought after spring events, and it is fitting that this group of boys were able to capture the trophy.

For many of these guys, it marks what has been a great career of spring and summer hockey, and many have played together since they were Atoms, some even younger, in the years to come, the line up that won this cup will no doubt be a memory of one that has produced many big time hockey players, a lot of effort and hard work goes into something that is worthwhile, and this was worth while for this collection of boys. This team posted 4 shutouts, and went 6 and 0. Quite an accomplishment.

Games : Game 1 5-3 vs Brandywine- Philadelphia, Game 2 4-2 92 Selects ONT/MICHIGAN, Game 3 9-0 vs Sudbury Miners, note of interest, first three shifts all scored a goal, Game 4 7-0 vs Montreal Ice Storm, Semi Final 7-0 vs Next Level Hockey (Toronto Jr Red Wings) Final 2-0 vs 92 Selects.

The Hockey Gods will need to shine Red Tomorrow on the Vs

In what was a great game after Oscar Ericsson tied it up in the last period vs the Sweden National Team All Stars the penalty bug took over. The Swedes defeated the Reds 4 1 on 3 PP goals and a penalty shot. By surprise the Reds had great command of the Swedes however the Don Cherry rule bit them again! The 2 foot glass in the defensive Zone bit the Reds twice one one penatly kill. However as hockey is a win in the morning creates a 3 way tie for second place and another crack at the gold medal game. This loss drops the Reds record to 6 and 3. Regardless of the outcome the Reds will play their final game later in the day Monday for either Bronze or Gold. The game this evening was the third game of the day on the Olympic Ice and the boys responded with a great effort against the only team in the tournament who are undefeated at now 9 and 0.

    V-Reds vs Spanga Sweden - Djurgarden World U 16

Game 3 this morning in Sweden saw the V-Reds open the day strong vs Spanga Hockey with a 6 - 1 win. The Reds dominated from start to finish with James Polk of the Shattuck St Marys Bantam Teir 1 team opening the scoring on the first shift of the game. Brandon Hynes of NF then took charge by scoring 3 goals in the next 10 minutes to put the game out of reach in the first period. Rounding out the scoring was Frederik Weigel and Jim Keilty. Zack Shannon and Garrett Clarke both picked up 4 assists each to help the Reds. Scoring for Spanga was Calle Moller brother of 50 goal scorer in the Western Hockey Oscar Moller. The V-Reds take on the undefeated Stocksunds IF in there next game. On an interesting note, the Stocksunds IF program visited the City of Fredericton in 1976 to play the then Fredericton Caps Pee Wee AAA team coached by Kevin Pottle.

The V-reds take on Sodertalje SK to complete their round robin action in the final game of the evening Saturday. Playoff action begins on Sunday. The V-Reds must pick up at least 1 more win to advance to the medal round.

The Reds record thus far is 2 wins and 1 loss.

UNB Varsity Reds Win 2007 CIS National Championship

The UNB Varsity Reds captured the CIS National Championship on Sunday, March 25th defeating the University of Moncton in overtime. All of the Prospects are proud of the big club’s success but none more than 96 VRed Prospects player and team captain Spencer Smallman. Spencer is the son of VRed power forward Stacy Smallman who also serves as the Coach of the 96’s. Spencer can now look forward to attending seven spring tournaments with his dad and maybe bring home some more hardware for the AUC.

Coach Mac had this to say about Stacey.
"Stacy culminated his 4 year Varsity red career by helping the V Reds win the 2007 CIS National Ch'ship ..the rugged Smallman saved his best hockey for the CIS Championships as his line along with Johnston & Marach was a dominant force all weekend for the V Reds. Stacy is an Asst Cpt and a top notch leader on & off the ice , one of the hardest working players and a tremendous role model for the team."

Congratulations to the Varsity Reds from your biggest fans… the Prospects!

Total Hockey’s first year a huge success!

Total Hockey is a program started primarily by Coach George Wood to develop area hockey players into the best they can be. The players that supplemented their minor hockey had lots of ice time (over 120 hours this season) of power skating, stick handling and shooting. Based out of the UNB AUC the Total Hockey kids were primarily UNB VRed Prospects but did attract some other Fredericton and area players that are not VReds. The ages ranged from 94’s to 98’s and even a couple of 99’s and by the closing weekend it is obvious to all how much the players have developed their hockey skills. All are looking forward to using these finely tuned skills in the upcoming season which kicks off for most teams the first weekend of April. Thanks to Coach Wood for the tireless effort and dedication he has put in to all our kids.
